Of the four overtures that Beethoven composed for Fidelio, his only opera, Leonore Overture No.3 is the most expressive and renowned, balancing both grandeur and emotional drama; Dvořák’s Cello Concerto is a tour de force of elegance encompassing a huge range of emotions, celebrated as one of the greatest concertos written for the instrument. Vivaldi’s Concerto for 2 Cellos in G minor has long been recognized as a Baroque masterpiece, demanding perfect rapport between soloists and orchestra as well as between the two soloists. Baroque works can be deceptive in their seemingly straightforward nature. The Vivaldi work might be the most challenging in this program.
