Dmitry Shostakovich and Sergei Rachmaninoff were important Russian composers of the last century. Though they hailed from different backgrounds, they both contributed to the tradition and innovation of Russian music. Shostakovich composed two violin concertos, the first more noted in its essential classicism and distinct character. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No.2 marks the height of the composer’s artistic prowess, with distinct melodies, harmonies and orchestration that shine with poetic spirit and orchestral radiance. It is a true exemplar of Russian symphonic lyricism.
