This concert offers a feast of British flair from Edward Elgar and Benjamin Britten, two composers who injected new life into the English music scene in the past two centuries. Elgar’s five Pomp and Circumstance Marches were written at the peak of the composer’s career, and the first of which is still well-loved around the world. Britten’s Serenade contains beautiful lyrics (based on six English poems spanning different centuries) in inventive settings, and the horn soloist matches the tenor in both lyricism and drama. Britten’s Violin Concerto has been praised as a highly personal and virtuosic work. While respecting the British tradition, the composer integrated modernism in his own individual style.
