Begun while on a journey in Italy, Felix Mendelssohn’s youthful Symphony No.4 has since assumed its nickname. Although written in his early 20s, the work is well-crafted and filled with the sunshine that so enchanted the composer. Sergei Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.1 was another youthful work that not only tests a soloist’s virtuosity but presents the audience with a uniquely modernist approach—it is filled with big contrasts, including some lyrical moments. Maurice Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé was music for dance later arranged as concert suites, of which the second has become an audience favorite.
