HIGHLIGHT

Although Igor Stravinsky and Tan Dun hail from different musical eras and cultural backgrounds, both are revolutionaries who have extended our notions of innovation and diversity. The four featured works cover a wide expanse of influence: Stravinsky’s opera The Nightingale was adapted from Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tale and the subsequent suite Song of the Nightingale exemplifies the art of orchestration and dramatic writing. The Firebird Suite, based on the ballet that established Stravinsky’s fame, wields musical magic in portrayal. Tan Dun adapted his film music to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to create an erhu concerto combining lyricism and drama. The pipa concerto Three Springs was inspired by Li Bai’s Drinking Alone Under the Moon, tracing poetry in music, capturing the carefree romance of the Tang dynasty.
